Cutchogue is where Long Island wine began — Hargrave Vineyard went into the ground here in 1973 — and the hamlet has been the centre of the wine trail ever since. It also holds Nassau Point, the peninsula reaching down into Peconic Bay that carries some of the most valuable waterfront on the North Fork; Einstein summered there in 1939 and wrote the letter to Roosevelt from a rented cottage on it.

The hamlet markets itself as the sunniest spot in New York State, which the growers take more seriously than the tourist board does. Between the vineyards, Fort Corchaug and the preserved farmland, a good deal of Cutchogue is protected from development permanently — worth knowing when you look at what a building lot costs here.
