Mattituck is the North Fork hamlet that most resembles a town. Love Lane gives it a genuine walkable centre — a butcher, a bookshop, a bakery, restaurants — and the Mattituck Inlet gives it the only navigable harbour on the entire Long Island Sound side of the fork, which is why the marinas and the boatyards are here.

That combination makes Mattituck the practical choice for full-time residents: it has the services, its own school district, a train station, Sound beaches to the north and bay beaches to the south. Prices reflect it, but Mattituck is one of the few places out here where you do not need to drive for a loaf of bread.
