Orient is the last hamlet on the North Fork and the most deliberately preserved. The village is a designated historic district of eighteenth and nineteenth-century houses, the surrounding farmland is largely protected, and there is no commercial strip to speak of — the effect is of somewhere that stopped changing a hundred years ago and intends to keep it that way.

Orient Beach State Park runs out along a sand spit into Gardiners Bay, and at Orient Point the Cross Sound Ferry crosses to New London, Connecticut — eighty minutes, cars aboard, which makes New England considerably more accessible from here than from anywhere else on Long Island.
