Southold is the seat of the town that governs most of the North Fork, and it is consistently the fork's largest housing market — usually the deepest inventory of any hamlet out here. Settled in 1640, it is also one of the oldest English settlements in the state, and Founders Landing on the bay marks where that started.

It offers about the widest range on the fork: Sound-front on the north shore below Horton Point Lighthouse, bay-front and creek-front to the south, and a substantial stock of ordinary inland houses that put the two within a short drive. Kenney's Beach and Founders Landing are the local beaches, and Greenport is ten minutes east for restaurants.
